Week 9: Loose yourself to Impressionism

Let’s loosen up your mark-making with the Impressionist movement.  Taking inspiration from the classic masters Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, find a lovely view, landscape, or whatever scene catches your eye (photo references are fine) and render it with either oil or soft pastels.  Keep your marks open and don’t blend too much.  Feel free to work quickly and gesture-ly, but pay attention to your light source and ambiance.  Explore a full color range but you may want an extra white (note: the soft color range of their palette).  Don’t get hung up on the details- capture the impression.

Our annual Make Your Mark Sale started this week and runs thru the end of April; that means all pastels are buy 2, get 1 FREE!  We have a wide range of types and colors for every budget.  Sets are on sale, too!

Week 10: Fresh Fruit with Janet Fish

cartwheel-2000Going grocery shopping this week? Pick up some produce that inspires color and composition, like the amazing still life pictures created by Janet Fish.  Arrange your subject in a pleasing light- notice the use of natural light in her work, and be sure to try this workout during the daylight. Place your subject in a colorful bowl, or get items with colorful packaging and just draw the plastic. We suggest using Conte crayons, a classic drawing medium that has a smooth feel like an oil pastel, but blends like a chalk pastel (minus the mess!).  Be bold with your color selection and blending. And once you’re done, enjoy a lovely fruit salad!

fish_peachesConte crayons are available in lots of colors – not just the sanguine and black from life drawing lessons! Right now, when you buy 3 or more individual sticks at Wet Paint they are only $1.66 each!  It’s a great time to try all of your favorite colors.

WP Weekly Workout- Week 6: Panorama with PanPastels

10041

Claude Monet’s Nightfall

Take a stroll, look out the window, and paint the town!   Using the gorgeous Claude Monet pastel painting as inspiration, build, blend, and form your surroundings with smooth chalk pastels.  Don’t think of this workout like a drawing exercise, but a chance to blend color and build layers as a painter would.   We suggest using PanPastels because they take the mess out of traditional chalk pastels by putting it in a convenient cake format.  It truly feels more like painting than drawing since you are using your fingers, paper towel, or the handy Sofft Tool applicators.  Blank white page jitters? Try toning down the paper first with a light application of a neutral color (or your favorite color) using a large Sofft art sponge.

The PanPastel colors are brilliant, clean and blend beautifully. Each pan contains 40% more color than an average stick pastel, and without the waste from chalk dust and crumbling sticks there’s even more product for you to use! Try these with the Sofft Tools and you’ll never look at chalk pastels the same again!  Right now at Wet Paint, you can get the PanPastel sets for 15% off our everyday price and individual colors are buy 2, get 1 FREE!  Click here to see all our PanPastels!
